The Diocese of Lake Charles was established on April 18, 1980 by Pope John Paul II with The Most Reverend Jude Speyrer as its first Bishop. In 2000, the Holy Father accepted Bishop Speyrer’s resignation and appointed The Most Reverend Edward K. Braxton as the second Bishop.

We depart by car from Sacred Heart Church in Lake Charles for Houston to fly to the National Black Catholic Congress in Indianapolis, Indiana.  In our group are: Ella Dartez Williams and Althea Williams of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Jennings, Jacque Mathews of Immaculate Heart of Mary, Jacqueline Semien-Guillory, Creighton Guillory, and me; a parishioner of Sacred Heart.
